On Friday, August 29, 2025, a federal appeals court upheld
the lower court ruling that President Donald Trump's tariffs are unlawful.
The ruling stated, "The core Congressional power to impose taxes such as
tariffs is vested exclusively in the legislative branch by the
Constitution." This means Trump, in the executive branch of the U.S.
government, overstepped his authority, to execute a financially disastrous
whim some such as myself publicly warned against, before he engaged these
foolish measures. The case now heads to the Supreme Court.
Once again, tariffs are not paid by foreign nations. This
is like when Trump said he was going to build the wall and make
neighboring Mexico pay for it. Then, an offended Mexican government
official lobbed some choice words over the border wall, replete with
expletives, and for once Trump shut his mouth. Tariffs are paid by
American companies and citizens who import goods. This causes price
increases on products the public purchases. This adds to and worsens
inflation.
America has been experiencing record inflation since the
COVID-19 pandemic. Trump and then Biden flooded the U.S. economy with cash
and it triggered an unprecedented inflation, which college business
textbooks will undoubtedly explore as a case of what not to do in a
crisis.
