Chris Brown
R&B singer Chris Brown, 37, was
arrested in London, England on May 15, 2025, in
connection with a night club assault he committed on
February 19, 2023. Brown and an associate, Hoody
Baby, real name Omololu Akinlolu, attacked music
producer Abe Diaw. Brown hit Diaw on the head twice
with a liquor bottle in a London night club.
Prosecutors referred to the incident as unprovoked.
The Manchester Evening News reported
Diaw sustained "severe and lasting injuries" due to
being beaten "over the head." Brown has now admitted
wrongdoing via his guilty plea. Last year Diaw sued
Brown and it was presumably settled out of court, as
he dropped the civil lawsuit.
Brown and Akinlolu pleaded guilty to
affray in exchange for prosecutors dropping the more
serious charges against them of "attempting to cause
grievous bodily harm" and "possession of an
offensive weapon." These charges would have landed
them in prison for many years. They now potentially
face up to 3-years in prison or at the least
supervised release. Sentencing is scheduled for
October 2026.
Brown has a detailed history of
arrests for assault. On February 9, 2009, Brown was
arrested for beating up then girlfriend, singer
Rihanna, after she began hitting him. Brown snapped,
then beat, bit and choked Rihanna to the point she
was almost unconscious. Brown pleaded guilty and was
given 5-years probation.
On June 14, 2012, Brown and pedo
rapper Drake got into a fight at a night club in New
York, after the latter began dating Rihanna. Bottles
were thrown and people in the club sustained
injuries. Former NBA basketball player, Tony Parker,
who was playing for the San Antonio Spurs at the
time, was injured and had to undergo surgery to
remove glass from one of his eyes. It was described
as a serious eye injury regarding his cornea.
In January 2013, Brown punched gay
singer Frank Ocean, who later declined to press
charges. In June 2016, Brown was sued by his former
manager Mike G for assault and
imprisonment/kidnapping. The case was settled out of
court. In 2017, Brown's then girlfriend Karrueche
Tran dumped him after years of mental and physical
abuse and filed a lawsuit against the singer seeking
a restraining order. The court hit Brown with a
5-year restraining order requiring him to stay away
from Tran.
Over a decade ago Brown has been
diagnosed with Bipolar II disorder. While that is no
excuse for his criminal behavior, as many people who
have Bipolar II disorder do not commit crimes, his
psychological problems run much deeper and warrant a
second look by medical professionals, as history has
shown he poses a threat to others.
